The entire wall above the Cliff Stair is a ground water seep caught here by a sudden April frost.

When the icicles melt, the moss is there relishing the moisture. Here is a link to some fascinating information from an earlier post, “Finger Lakes Water Chemistry.”

It can be, that day there was minimal ice on the trail. Overnight there was a sudden freeze without precipitation, affecting the water seeping from the cliff wall.

I’m envious that you have icicles to play with in the winter.

I was referring to your climatic winter, which up there is a lot longer than calendrical winter. The same goes for the Texas summer, which lasts much longer than three months.

Good advice, Dave. The gorge is very dangerous and closed this time of year. Other parts of the trail, there is minimal overhang. The ice underfoot still must be navigated. Black ice is the worst.
