Fallen Oak Leaf, Summer

Fallen Leaf on a Moss Carpet

Oak leaves hold on through the winter and last through the next season after the new leaves push the last ones off early spring.

This leaf lay on a moss carpet within in a hemlock grove on a bluff above Treman Lake, Buttermilk Falls State Park, Ithaca New York.  The moss carpet is extensive in the dense shade of the hemlocks.

Treman lake is formed by a dam on Buttermilk Creek, the trail around the lake is less frequented and popular with the locals, climbing up and down the glacially formed hills.  Some popular resorts maintain trails that feed into the park.

  1. It’s a lovely photo. My favorite detail is the hemlock cone. I was so deeply impressed by Longfellow’s “Evangeline” in school that I never hear the word “hemlock” without being transported to that forest primeval: the “murmuring pines and the hemlocks.”

    1. We need to cart ours to the “dump”, bag by bag in the passenger auto. Still have a huge pile we saved for “mulch”. The abundance of our yearly harvest overwhelmed our needs for “mulch.” Didn’t know some animals ate them….thanks!!

  2. Lovely detail and vivid colors! You have described the oak leaves well. We have one of those oak trees in our front yard, so we’ll get to rake leaves again in the spring.
