Sense of Scale

Come in and experience how humans are dwarfed by the eons

Lack of reference leads to a confused impression of this torrent of water. An adult human, standing on the lower rock ledges, will be dwarfed by the surroundings.

Lucifer Falls at moderate spring flood. The Gorge Trail is closed for the winter due to the danger of falling rock. The water volume can sweep an unwary hiker quickly over the brink.

The potential for fatalities is increased by black ice on the smooth slate walkways along the torrent. Can you spot the barrier blocking access to the path? I am at a secure perch at the falls overlook on the Rim Trail, opened at this season.

These shots were handheld. I used a Sony Alpha 700 dslr with a variable “zoom” lens, great for framing compositions.

    1. The trail is closed November until, May or so, the gorge walls pass inspection. Falling rocks are the primary danger. Once this is controlled, as long as hikers stay on the trail, the way is safe. No danger of being swept away by the falls. Some foolish people climb on the wall for a better view / selfies. Very dangerous!!

  1. Your images are powerful! I love waterfalls so much. We have a few here in Michigan. There is one, that, when I was a teenager on vacation with my sisters and parents, we coud walk behind. It was so amazing, I’ve never forgotten the thrill of standing behind a waterfall. It’s called Memorial Falls at Twin Waterfalls Nature Sanctuary.

    1. Good morning Kymber. We have two “walk behind” waterfalls in the Finger Lakes that I know of. Are “your” falls near Munising, MI? I marked them on my Google Maps. Ours are Watkins Glen New York State park, in the summer these are very crowded. A more difficult access is at Carpenter Falls near Skaneateles, New York.
