This insect is a Hoverfly (family Syrphidae). Hoverflies are often mistaken for bees or wasps due to their yellow and black striped body, but they are harmless and lack the ability to sting. They are beneficial pollinators and are common in gardens, meadows, and near flowers.

Once a small gap is achieved, the sea star everts its stomach through its mouth and into the prey’s shell, secreting digestive enzymes that liquefy the soft tissues within. In Autumn 2024, the Treman Park Lake Loop of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail in Ithaca, New York, unfurled a vibrant display of seasonal transition. The natural landscape, adorned with fiery hues of reds, oranges, and yellows, reflected in the rippling waters of Cayuga Lake, creating a harmony of color and light. This is a scenic journey through stories of plant and animal life that call this place home—including the majestic Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) that nests along the shore.
The Osprey’s Watchtower
A sight to greet visitors is the solitary osprey nest perched high on a pole. Used by Osprey families during their breeding season, this nest stands as a testament to their remarkable recovery in the Finger Lakes region. Ospreys, once declining due to pesticide use, have rebounded significantly following conservation efforts.
With a wingspan of up to 6 feet, these raptors are expert fish hunters, often seen diving talons-first into the lake to snatch their prey. During autumn, as their young take flight, the nest remains an empty marker of the summer’s success—a reminder of the cyclical nature of life along the lake.

On this autumn Sapsucker Woods afternoon, the world seems crafted to soothe. Pam stands before the wide, outstretched wings painted on the wall at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, wings so vast that they dwarf her. She smiles, resting against her hiking poles, the Condor wings an emblem of a journey toward reclaiming freedom. Her recent hip replacement surgery has given her back this independence, a reminder that recovery is not just about physical mending, but about lifting the spirit to soar once again.

Discover the world of Florida’s ancient predators through the eyes of the formidable Smilodon fatalis. Step back in time to the Pleistocene epoch and explore the life, habits, and social bonds of the iconic sabertooth cat.
I examined an unusual map of Florida, the contours of its familiar modern shape overlaying a vast, green expanse. The state as we know it today is crisscrossed by highways and dotted with bustling cities, but this map transported me back in time to a very different era. During the Pleistocene epoch, Florida was a wilder, untamed land, teeming with life and dominated by creatures long extinct.

Exploring Brevard (county) Museum of History and Natural Science of Cocoa Florida, I moved to the next exhibit. The air hummed in my imagination with the whispers of an ancient world. A skeletal figure loomed within a glass case – the mighty Smilodon fatalis, the sabertooth cat. Its fearsome fangs curved downward, I imagined standing face-to-face with this apex predator, feeling both awe and a primal fear.
Florida, some 11,500 years ago, was a place of significant climatic shifts. The Pleistocene epoch was characterized by repeated glaciations; however, Florida itself remained unglaciated. The climate was cooler and drier than today, and sea levels were much lower, extending the coastline outward. This ancient Florida was a mosaic of grasslands, savannas, and woodlands. Giant sloths, mammoths, and mastodons roamed these lands, sharing the territory with the formidable Smilodon.
The attendant palque described Smilodon fatalis was about a foot shorter than modern lions but nearly twice as heavy. Its stocky build and powerful limbs suggested immense strength. Unlike the cheetahs and lions of today, Smilodon had a bobtail, indicating that it relied less on speed and more on ambush tactics. I could almost see it now: crouching low in the underbrush, muscles coiled, waiting for the perfect moment to spring upon its unsuspecting prey.
In the reconstructed display, the sabertooth cat’s lethal precision was evident. Its elongated canines were deadly tools designed to pierce and hold onto struggling prey. The lack of a long tail, which modern big cats use for balance during high-speed chases, suggested that Smilodon was an ambush predator. The morning sun filtered through the lush canopy of trees as I guided my grandchildren, down the familiar path towards Comstock Creek of the Cayuga Nature Center. The children were familiar with the creek from time spent in summer camp. This little haven of nature is a favorite spot of theirs. Comstock Creek, named after the Comstock family, stands as a testament to their significant contributions to entomology and nature education. John Henry Comstock, a renowned entomologist, and his wife, Anna Botsford Comstock, a pioneering figure in nature study, left an indelible mark on the Ithaca area and beyond. Their legacy lives on, not just in the academic world, but in these very waters where my grandchildren now play.
As we reached the creek, the children wasted no time kicking off their shoes and wading into the cool, shallow water. My grandson, in his red shirt, and granddaugter, in her green one, both radiated joy and curiosity. The sunlight danced on the water’s surface, casting shimmering reflections that seemed to animate the entire scene.
The youngest was the first to discover a small pool where the water had carved out a deeper spot. “Look, Grandpa!” he exclaimed, his voice full of excitement. The day wouldn’t have been complete without a splash in the pool. Back home, grandmother set up the inflatable volleyball net while the kids changed into their swimsuits. The pool became a hub of activity as they splashed around, their laughter blending with the sound of the water.
Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. The Comstock family’s dedication to nature education had inspired generations, including my own. The morning air was crisp and filled with the promise of adventure as we set off for the Cayuga Nature Center, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Ithaca. The destination: the Treetops Treehouse, a magical structure that promised an immersive experience in nature for me, my sister Diane and two grandsons, Sam and Rory.
As we approached the treehouse, the boys’ excitement was palpable. The Treetops Treehouse is a marvel of rustic architecture, a multi-level structure that blends seamlessly with the surrounding forest. It was designed to give visitors a bird’s-eye view of the forest canopy, allowing for a unique perspective on the local flora and fauna.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the gentle rustle of leaves and the chorus of bird songs. The boys raced ahead, eager to explore the winding pathways and hidden nooks of the treehouse. The snail appeared to be from the genus Triodopsis or Neohelix, possibly Triodopsis albolabris or Neohelix albolabris, known for their white-lipped shells. These snails are common in moist, forested environments and play a crucial role in the ecosystem as decomposers. They feed on decaying plant material, helping to recycle nutrients back into the soil.

Further along the meadow trail, we made our way to the Finger Lakes Beekeepers Club Learning Apiary. The apiary is a place of learning and discovery, where visitors can gain insight into the fascinating world of honeybees and beekeeping.
The apiary is composed of several beehives, each carefully maintained by members of the Beekeepers Club. We were careful to keep our distance from the electrified fence, protection against marauding bears and humans.

Life Beneath the Waves
Hermit crabs are fascinating creatures, exhibiting behaviors and adaptations that ensure their survival in the ever-changing marine environment. These crabs are not born with shells. Instead, they scavenge for empty shells discarded by snails, meticulously choosing the perfect fit. The shells provide essential protection against predators and environmental hazards.
In their early life stages, hermit crabs undergo a series of molts, shedding their exoskeletons to grow. Each molt presents a critical opportunity to upgrade their shell, moving to a larger one as they increase in size. It was winter 2017, and the cool breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean. My eyes scanned the sand for treasures, remnants of the ocean’s bounty washed ashore by the relentless rhythm of the tides.
The beach was a mosaic of shells, fragments of marine life that had completed their journey. Among them, a particular shell caught my eye – the Moon Snail or Necklace Shell, scientific name Naticidae, known for its smooth, spiraled form and glossy finish. The shell I found that morning was bathed in the early light, its curves reflecting the phases of the moon, hinting at the mysteries of the ocean from which it came.
The scientific name of the Moon Snail, belonging to the family Naticidae, finds its roots in the rich tapestry of classical languages, reflecting the distinct characteristics and historical context of these marine gastropods. This winter past, January 2024, I enjoyed a rare sight – a live Moon Snail washed up on the shore. The small, compact form was nestled in the sand, its body partially retracted into its shell. I carefully picked it up gently. The snail’s soft, pale brown body contrasted with the hard, glossy shell, a perfect example of nature’s duality.
Observing the snail closely, I could see its large foot, a muscular organ that it uses for locomotion and burrowing into the sand. The foot’s underside, called the sole, was slightly sticky, aiding in its movement. The snail’s head, with its small, retractable tentacles, peeked out cautiously. These tentacles are equipped with sensory organs, allowing the snail to explore its surroundings and detect prey.
Moon Snails are predatory creatures, and their diet consists mainly of other mollusks. The snail’s mantle, a fleshy part of its body, secretes the shell and also houses the snail’s siphon. The siphon is used for breathing and detecting chemical signals in the water, crucial for hunting. The snail’s radula, a toothed, tongue-like organ, is a formidable tool for drilling into the shells of its prey. The Moon Snail wraps its large foot around its victim, creating an acidic environment that helps it bore a hole into the shell.
