Dawn’s Gift: A Beachcomber’s Tale


As the first light of dawn stretched its golden fingers across the horizon, I made my way down the familiar path to Cocoa Beach. It was an early January morning, and the air was crisp, with a hint of salt carried on the gentle breeze. The tide was high, giving the beach an intimate feel, as if the ocean itself was reaching out to share its secrets.

I’ve always found beachcombing to be a meditative experience, but today’s stroll was particularly enchanting. The beach was deserted, save for the scuttling sandpipers searching for their breakfast. The rhythmic crash of the waves provided a soothing soundtrack to my thoughts. As I walked, my eyes scanned the shoreline, seeking treasures among the flotsam of the sea.

A Striped Treasure Unveiled


And then, I saw it—a distinctive shell caught between the ebb and flow of the waves. Its bold pattern and unique shape were unmistakable even from a distance. I quickened my pace, eager to claim my prize before the sea could reclaim it. As I picked it up, water cascading off its curved surface, I marveled at the beauty in my hand: a Scotch Bonnet shell, a rarity to behold, especially here in Florida.

The Allure of the Scotch Bonnet


The Scotch Bonnet, named for its resemblance to the traditional Scottish tam o’ shanter hat, is a shell as fascinating as it is beautiful. Its scientific name, Phalium granulatum, speaks to the granulated texture that adorns its exterior. In my hand lay a symphony of creamy white and tan, with bold, brownish squares that resembled a carefully woven tartan. It was a mature specimen, its wide aperture and thickened outer lip suggesting it had lived a full life before arriving at my feet.

A Journey Through Nature’s Cycle


Fascinated by my find, I visited the Brevard County Museum of Natural History later that day. There, I learned that the Scotch Bonnet is more than just a pretty shell—it’s the former home of a gastropod, a creature that once crawled along the ocean floor of the Atlantic, from North Carolina to Brazil. These mollusks begin life as tiny larvae, floating in the currents until they grow large enough to settle on the seabed. They feast on sea stars, their radula—a toothy tongue—scraping their prey into digestible pieces.

The Scotch Bonnet’s predators are as varied as the ocean itself, from fish to other sea snails that prey upon the young or unsuspecting. Yet, the shell’s thick construction provides a sturdy defense, a fortress that serves its inhabitant well during its life.

Death Gives Life


The end of the Scotch Bonnet’s life cycle often provides a beginning for others. After death, the empty shell becomes a sought-after real estate for hermit crabs and a canvas for encrusting organisms like barnacles. It’s a reminder of the interconnectedness of the marine ecosystem, where even in death, life flourishes.

In the quiet of the museum, I reflected on the journey of the shell in my pocket. It was not just a Scotch Bonnet; it was a chronicle of survival, adaptation, and ecological significance. It was a legacy of the ocean’s depth and a symbol of life’s tenacity.

As I left the museum, I thought about the Scotch Bonnet’s significance to beachcombers and collectors. Its scarcity makes it a coveted find, a gem among shells. To hold one is to touch a piece of the ocean’s mystery, to connect with a world that is often beyond our reach.

That January morning on Cocoa Beach, the high tide had gifted me a treasure. But it wasn’t just the discovery of the Scotch Bonnet that was precious—it was the reminder that beauty and wonder can be found in the smallest of ocean’s offerings. Every shell has a story, a past woven into the fabric of the marine world. And as I pocketed my find, I carried with me not just a shell, but the echoes of an underwater tapestry, rich and alive, just waiting to be discovered.

A Visit with Tom and Hen Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving

The Catskill Mountains are not mountains. The Catskills started as a high plateau. Over eons, before the first humans, water, the sun, and wind carved high steep peaks: rounded, forested and teeming with life.


October 2008, on a return trip from family on Long Island, we traveled the winding road called “Route 17”, through the high autumn hillsides.

Fishs Eddy

As the sun passed over the western hills we stopped to explore a place called “Fishs Eddy”, a town on the banks of the Delaware River.

On the east side, facing sunset is a formation that would be a cliff if it was not for the hardwood trees growing from every available nook, crevice. Everywhere a root could be sunk, roots fed trees that, one late October afternoon, made a hill bright with autumn.

Turkey Habitat

Turkeys live in this type of habitat. We took a trail, barely a road that climbed past failed farms and hunting shacks.

The Hens Flee

On a level place, in front of a ruined home, we came upon a Tom (male) turkey and his four hens. The hens fled at the sight of us.
With barely time to raise the camera I caught Tom and the last hen as she fled into the bushes.

I say she, because Tom stayed behind. He stood erect, all three feet of him, defiant and strutting in a direction opposite from the hens.


This is the bird Benjamin Franklin proposed as the national emblem of the new United State of America (the bald eagle won that competition).


Hunted into almost oblivion, across the United States the wild turkey is making a dramatic comeback in many places, including the forests and farmland of rural New York State

This fellow made no noise. His strutting posture and head bobbing said it all.


We left Tom Turkey in peace to his domain and hens.

Treman Early Autumn Walk X

The zigzag goldenrod is a crucial plant to North American pollinator biodiversity, hosting diverse insects.

After crossing the bridge at Swan Road I turned back down the gorge on the Rim Trail, climbing above the gorge where these interesting woodland goldenrod thrive.

“Solidago flexicaulis, the broadleaved goldenrod, or zigzag goldenrod,is a North American species of herbaceous perennial plants in the family Asteraceae. It is native to the eastern and central parts of the United States and Canada, from Nova Scotia west to Ontario and the Dakotas, and south as far as Alabama and Louisiana. It grows in a variety of habitats including mesic upland forests, well drained floodplain forests, seepage swamp hummocks, and rocky woodlands.”

“The plant is called the “zigzag goldenrod” because the thin, wiry stem zigs and zags back and forth, changing direction at each node (leaf attachment point). The plant bears sometimes as many as 250 small yellow flower heads, some at the end of the stem, others in the axils of the leaves. The leaves are very broad, almost round, but with an elongated tip at the end and large teeth along the edges.”

“Goldenrod is considered a keystone species and has been called the single most important plant for North American pollinator biodiversity. Goldenrod species are used as a food source by the larvae of many Lepidoptera species. As many as 104 species of butterflies and moths use it as a host plant for their larvae, and 42 species of bees are goldenrod specialists, visiting only goldenrod for food. Some lepidopteran larvae bore into plant tissues and form a bulbous tissue mass called a gall around it, upon which the larva then feeds. Various parasitoid wasps find these galls and lay eggs in the larvae, penetrating the bulb with their ovipositors. Woodpeckers are known to peck open the galls and eat the insects in the center.”

Farewell to the Monarchs for 2023

Migrating monarchs soar at heights of up to 1,200 feet. As sunlight hits those wings, it heats them up, but unevenly. Black areas get hotter, while white areas stay cooler. The scientists believe that when these forces are alternated, as they are with a monarch’s white spots set against black bands on the wings’ edges, it seems to create micro-vortices of air that reduce drag—making flight more efficient.

Monarchs begin leaving the northern US and Canada in mid-August. They usually fly for 4-6 hours during the day, coming down from the skies to feed in the afternoon and then find roosting sites for the night.  Monarchs cannot fly unless their flight muscles reach 55ºF. On a sunny day, these muscles in their thorax can warm to above air temperature when they bask (the black scales on their bodies help absorb heat), so they can actually fly if it is 50ºF and sunny. But on a cloudy day, they generally don’t fly if it is below 60ºF.

“Migrating monarchs use a combination of powered flight and gliding flight, maximizing gliding flight to conserve energy and reduce wear and tear on flight muscles.  Monarchs can glide forward 3-4 feet for every foot they drop in altitude.  If they have favorable tail or quartering winds, monarchs can flap their wings once every 20-30 feet and maintain altitude. Monarchs are so light that they can easily be lifted by the rising air. But they are not weightless. In order to stay in the air, they must move forward while also staying within the thermal. They do this by moving in a circle. The rising air in the thermal carries them upward, and their overall movement ends up being an upward spiral. Monarchs spiral upwards in the thermal until they reach the limit/top of the thermal (where the rising air has cooled to the same temperature as the air around it). At that point, the monarch glides forward in a S/SW direction with the aid of the wind. It glides until it finds another thermal and rides that column of rising air upwards again.”
